So last month ago, I went to a usual after work stroll in one of th emalls in Batangas where I am deployed for work.
I passed by a hobby stand (RAMS) and saw a bunch of for sale (read: discount bins) Hot Wheels cars.
Now Im not really into die-cast 1:64cars, but I do have some in my collection some selected ones, like a HW Mechanix Chevy 64, several F1 and NASCAR HW, CARS diecasts, A 1:18 Die Cast Cobra, A LeMans Racing McLaren and several I cant remember that remains boxed in my storage still waiting to be displayed.
SO there I was, i took out some loose cars, rolled it on the glass to see if they are still good. My aim was to buy some for my son to play with, so I grab a bunch of 'em (around 8 pieces) payed for it then went on my way.
A week after as I was at home, my son still asleep, took out the paper bag with the cars from my back-pack and laid it out on the dinning table...then something sparked in my rather glutinous craving for collecting (thats the hobbyist kickin in). I inspected my haul, took out the laptop and iPhone (for faster multi platform internet browsing :D )- and began reading anything Hot Wheels. Checked some videos, inspected the cars again, then I remembered having a HW carrying case I bought a long time ago from TK on a discount price. I searched for it within the cabinets where I usually store my unorganized loot and there and then I found it (filled with the wifes pearl thingies).
I checked back again on the cars, decided to store it on the case, and kept it back in the cabinet.
I never got to give it to my son. But as a way to compensate for that, I remembered seeing china made diecasts worth around 50php a pack of 3. So I went back the mall the next week bought 3 packs of 3's and a pack of 4's. Side tracked to the hotwheels discount shop again and again bought 6 more.
There and then I know I was hooked.
Back home, i gave my son the china die-casts and boy was he very happy (he's going 4 as of this writing)...so I knew its ok to keep the HW for myself for the meantime.
Weeks moved on and I bought some vintaged (thats HW releases past 2010 below) blisters and some more loose and now I have a virtual army, and its still growing.
Like the previous hobbies I am into, this one is actually giving me much pleasure because of three things:
1. the HW market is basically not saturated in the Philippines, well there are groups and some sellers are into selling limited/chase items but i wont go there. With the variety HW has on the market, I dont intend to join the speculative game. That means I have more open choice of what i want and there are a lot of sellers out there that give discounted cars (honestly - HW sells a dollar less in the US, thats 50 to 6o php, but sellers here gives a minimum of a 150php for a blistered common)
2. This is a lot cheaper to collect and a lot more variety, unlike one drop kits worth my "kinsenas".
3. ...and lastly, I get to enjoy this with my Son who i love dearly. All my collection will be his when he comes of age, and for now, I will have to enjoy the time to play with him with Hot Wheels while I collect some for my own.
So here's to another era of my hobbying life....... cheers!
